Here's an awesome hack from the MacMod site that shows you how to convert an original NES game cartridge into an external USB hard drive.
How do you do it? Well, you take an old NES game cartridge and rip the guts out of it, which is not as easy as it sounds. The NES cartridges "have this really interesting security bit that's pretty much impossible to find, save for the internet. It's a 3.8mm reverse Torx which, I've found is sold under the name “GameBit” by several different companies." But, after you get a GameBit tool, open up the cartridge and take the internals out, the hack gets a little easier. The next step is to smooth out all the little nobs and ridges on the inside of the casing so you can fit a laptop hard drive inside. This can be done with a dremel tool or by hand with sand paper if don't mind working up a sweat! Then you slap your hard drive in, add a couple LEDs for affect and close the casing back up. Congratulations you're new NES external hard drive is ready for action. Ain't recycling fun?? :-)
