It is obvious that the indoor air is much more polluted than the outdoor air. This is because there are environmental contaminants getting into your own house such as pollen, vehicle emission, dust mites, and other harmful chemicals. But they have one thing in common, it is that almost all of them thrive in humid environments.
If you live in a humid climate, you will probably have to suffer from all of those allergy triggers. That is the reason why so many people living in humid climates are more likely to have allergies or asthma than people in dry climates.
However, even when you live in a dry climate, there is still a chance that you may have allergies since moisture or damp can build up in small living spaces with limited ventilation such as kitchens or bathrooms in a small apartment.

How to make a homemade dehumidifier
As I said, even when you live in a dry climate, there is still a chance that the allergens can get into your home through ventilation systems or windows. Therefore, no matter where you live, a dehumidifier is basically beneficial for your health.
Nonetheless, you have to know that if the humidity levels in your home is not too high then spending a lot of money for an expensive dehumidifier is not. That is why I’m here to show you how to make a homemade dehumidifier.
Many people think that making a dehumidifier is impossible but trust me, I can do it and you can, too. All you need to do is just to follow the following instructions:
First, you need to prepare all the things below:
- Electrical drill
- Plastic buckets
- Marker pen
- Rock salt
Step 1: Drill a hole in the bottom of a medium sized plastic bucket with the drill and the hole should be at least 1/4 inch in diameter. Remember to wear safety goggles while drilling.
Step 2: Place a piece of mesh or chicken wire at the bottom of the bucket to cover the hole you’ve just drilled. Size to fit by placing the mesh underneath the bucket and tracing the perimeter onto the mesh with a marker pen. After that, use wire cutters or snips to cut the mesh
– Fill that bucket with rock salt and place it on a stand which should be resistant to corrosion and drying as well as porous enough so that moisture can drip through.
– Remember that a perfect stand would be similar to a stack of plastic milk crates and the height of the stand has to depend on the amount of available space.
– Place another bucket underneath the stand in order to catch moisture content. This bucket will not have a hold and it is simply a net to prevent the captured moisture from seeping to your room.
Direct moisture towards the bucket using a fan so as to increase effectiveness. However, this is not really necessary in small areas but can actually help collect moisture in large rooms.
Check how your home made dehumidifier works by testing the relative humidity in the indoor air with a hygrometer. Keep in mind that the bigger your dehumidifier is, the more effectively it can work.
